October 1, 2024
Auditions are complete. Rehearsals are underway. The Huntington High School drama club is preparing to stage Adam Szymkowicz’s Kodachrome, which premiered at Portland Center Stage in Oregon in February 2018.
Huntington drama club faculty advisor Michael Schwendemann is working with 16 cast members to master the production, which will take the stage on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, November 2 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door.
The cast features Josie Sullivan (Photographer-Suzanne), Alex Tine (Gravedigger-Earl), Walter Lopez (Hardware store owner-Charlie), James Stensland (History professor-Harold), Alexa Schrippa (Mystery novelist-Georgette), Deveren Flynn (Marjory), Michael DiVincenzo (Young man-Robert), Kyra Scott (Young woman-Florence), Maggie O’Toole (Friend), Isabelle Gregorio (EMT 1), Isabella Cruz-Ponce (EMT 2), Sofia Rodriguez (Librarian-Renee), Michaela Dopico (Waitress-Jen), Sergio Portillo (Perfume maker-Martin), Toni Reyes-Sorto (Policeman-Pete) and Lily Wasoski (Florist-Heather).
Rehearsals were launched successfully. “Everything is going really well,” Ms. Scott said. “The cast is already working so hard. I’m so excited for this play season.”
“Our show takes place in a small town where everyone knows each other and the pace of life allows the pursuit of love to take up as much space as it needs,” according to a preview. “Our tour guide is Suzanne, the town photographer, who lets us peek into her neighbor’s lives to catch glimpse of romance in all its stages of development. A play about love, nostalgia, the seasons and how we learn to say goodbye.”
“The Kodachrome rehearsal process has been going great,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “We’re still in the beginning stages so a lot of exciting things are still to come, but so far we’ve done a lot of great character work as well as read-throughs and I know they are going to serve us well in the long run. I’m so excited to continue working on this amazing show. I know it's going to turn out beautifully.”
Mr. Schwendemann came to Huntington in January 2003. He earned a Bachelor's degree in drama and theatre at Queens College in 1986 and obtained a Master in Fine Arts degree in acting at the University of Alabama in 1996. He took additional courses at Long Island University in 2002, securing his English teaching certification.
