Grandfriends Collaborate on Thanksgiving Senior Citizen Initiative

November 27, 2024

The Huntington High School Grandfriends and Key Club collaborated on a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the hungry among the community’s senior citizens.

Grandfriends faculty advisors Suzi Biagi and Lauren Blackburn and Key Club advisors Kelly Krysinski and Gina Colica joined their club members in the collection of hundreds of items.

“Ten overflowing bundles were delivered to the Town of Huntington’s Senior Citizen Center,” Ms. Biagi said. “Each ‘basket’ was packed with goodies and included an adorable GrandFriends card with a $20 gift card attached for the raffle winners to use to buy a holiday turkey or anything else they need.”

The free raffle occurred during the Thanksgiving meal served at the senior center last week. “I just love making the baskets because I know they go to a great cause and the seniors truly enjoy receiving them,” said junior Olivia McGreevy, a veteran of the Grandfriends club. “I’m sure it makes their Thanksgiving super special.”

Grandfriends club members are always “there” for local senior citizens. The intergenerational club brings together those spanning the generations, making for a rewarding experience for both groups.

“We are just so proud of our kids,” Ms. Biagi said. “I’m in awe of them actually. This year the club is swelling with newbies and excited upperclassmen, who are being wonderful mentors to them. Their hearts are so big and Lauren Blackburn, my co advisor and I could not be prouder.”
