The Huntington junior varsity boys’ golf team compiled a 10-5 record this past fall. The Blue Devils were coached by social studies teacher James Graber and captained by Joe Perotti and Graham Gooch. The roster included 14 players.

Huntington High School JV golf coach James Graber.

“I thought the JV team played really well this season, especially after our No. 1 player and captain earned a spot on the varsity team,” Graber said. “Everyone ended up playing up a spot, but we didn’t lose a step. I was proud of how they battled.”

Perotti, Gooch and fellow sophomore Reed Cummiskey led the JV squad. “Joe Perotti successfully moved from the JV to the varsity team,” Graber said. “His experience and consistency on the JV team paid dividends in his promotion. Graham successfully moved into the No. 1 spot on the JV by season’s end. He led the team by example with his even play.”

Cummiskey also stood out. “A newcomer, Reed shows promise for the future and he became a reliable scorer this year,” Graber said.

Perotti led Huntington with the best score to par average of 5.8. Gooch lost only one time in 15 matches.

The roster also included Gannon Johnson, Luke Lomler, Walter Lopez Martinez, James Markotsis, Brenan McNulty, Tom Nicotra, Evan Persampire, Jackson Poli, Henry Schmid, Max Schmitz, Ronan Sosnowski and John Stair.

“The JV team had a solid run this year, earning twice as many wins as losses,” Graber said. “Our 10-5 record is an improvement over previous years and sets a high standard for next year’s squad.”

Looking ahead, Graber is looking to incorporate more practice drills into sessions at the driving range to maximize the increase in student performance. He’s also exploring the possibility of adding playing slots to his matches to increase the number of players who get to golf on a regular basis.
