Huntington Environmental Club Strives for Healthier World
November 22, 2024
Huntington High School’s Environmental Club is working hard to make the school, community and world a cleaner and greener place.
Club officers include Emma Boyle (president), Emma Polinsky (vice president), Amalia Heinz (recording secretary), Emma Marsala (treasurer), Mabelin Maldonado (publicist) and Olivia Lee (attendance officer). Teachers Alissa German and Anna Jao serve as the organization’s faculty advisors.
“We have big plans and aspirations for this year,” Ms. Polinsky said. “As always, we want to get people involved throughout the school in improving the environment. We are planning several different activities with this goal in mind including terrarium building and local trash cleanups. Presently, every other week our club members collect paper recycling from the science rooms to avoid unnecessary waste.”
Many of the club’s initiatives have traditionally focused on sustainability and Earth-friendly advocacy. A real desire to make the world a cleaner, healthier and altogether better place is what motivates the club members as they go about their work. Past club events have included Earth Day parties, school recycling initiatives, garden clean-ups and a Gardening Day celebration, along with community clean-ups
“A major goal for us this year is to begin a school-wide initiative to improve Huntington High School’s environmental impact,” Ms. Polinsky said. “One way in which we can make this possible would be to create a community garden. Overall, environmental club is a great way to meet people who are passionate about not only environmental sustainability, but the wellbeing of their community as well.”
