School Board Presentation Focuses on Woodhull School

Principal Stephanie Campbell, Learners Who LEAD program teacher Nicole Leggio and a group of articulate students gave a look into Woodhull Intermediate School during a presentation at Monday’s Huntington School Board meeting.

The presentation included segments titled “Enhancing Woodhull’s Aesthetic Appeal: Improvements Inside and Outside our School,” “Promoting Positive School Culture: “The Woodhull Way,” “Building Stronger Connections: Increased Opportunities for Family Engagement and Highlight our Students” and Launching the Learners Who LEAD program: A New Initiative for Student Growth and Leadership.”

Students introduced and spoke briefly about each topic. Ms. Campbell and Ms. Leggio facilitated the presentation and added to the talking points.

The presentation included a variety of colorful photos, including ones of the new canopy and garden beds outside the school, the new patio and furniture, bilingual signage, new gymnasium floor and graphics, freshly painting hallways, new bulletin boards and displays and murals.

Brief overviews of Woodhull’s outdoor classroom and science lab were provided along with “then and now” photos of the courtyard where the initiative took root. Photos of students reading on the patio of the great outdoors in the courtyard and of students pursuing math exploration in the same space were featured in the presentation.

The Woodhull Pledge and The Woodhull Way program that emphasizes positive behavior and school culture were also discussed. Programs such as WE are Woodhull, Artists of the Month, Eagles of the Month and monthly slideshows that feature Woodhull students were also highlighted.

The presentation covered the Build a Tower Challenge, Multicultural Night, Build a Catapult STEM Challenge and Family Paint Night. Each of the special events helps Woodhull engage families.

The newly introduced Learners Who LEAD initiative was also discussed in detail. “It’s a dynamic curriculum designed to inspire and empower Woodhull students to make a positive impact in their community and the world,” Ms. Campbell said. “This course will provide students with an opportunity to learn the value of service, connect their academic knowledge to real-world challenges, and develop the skills and mindset of a community leader. We are confident that this program will be a transformative experience for our young learners, fostering a lifelong commitment to service and active citizenship.”

A list of possible service projects and community service field trips for 2024/25 was also presented. The Learners Who LEAD hive as discussed along with Veterans Day projects, Suffolk Police school resource officer civic responsibility assembly and Woodhull’s recycling program.

The presenting students were smart, articulate and altogether adorable. Their voices were filled with pride for their, their accomplishments and their classmates.
