Kenny Canas and Rylan Hook Pace Finley-White Soccer

November 20, 2024

Seventh grader Rylan Hook and eighth grader Kenny Canas captained and paced the Finley-White boys’ soccer team this fall. The 20 player squad was coached by science teacher Andrew Marcy.

Hook was the team’s star midfielder and Canas excelled in goal and at center forward. Rylan was able to help create scoring chances and always made sure the boys played as a team on the field,” Marcy said. “Kenny was outstanding in net and led the A team in saves and shutouts.”

The roster also included seventh graders Raul Argueta Dominguez, Robert Bellino, Brayan Caballero Reyes, Lucas Colby, Fredy Flores Gonzalez, Owen Hoffman, Fabian Martinez Umana and Luis Ponce Reyes and eighth graders Andy Alvarez Zelaya, Oliver Frintzilas, Miguel Herrera, Joshua Koiyet, Matthew Krull, Owen McGaw, Christian Mendez-Martinez, Cameron Miller, Shea Monge and Elder Vigil-Ordonez.

“The best team accomplishment was coming back from losing against both Commack teams,” Marcy said. “The boys rallied together and ended up in a tie with both teams. The two Commack teams were very strong, so the boys were very proud of themselves.”

Krull and Herrera were the leading goal scorers, Hook led in assists and Monge had the most saves in goal. Canas was the top defender.

“The team started the season not really knowing each other,” Marcy said. “Toward the end of the season, the boys were able to group together and I think they all became much closer. It was nice as a coach to get to practice and see the boys starting the drills on their own accord.”

Looking ahead to next year, Finley has nine returning seventh graders, “so we hope to be a strong team next season,” Marcy said.
