The Huntington High School varsity girls’ soccer team wrapped up its season with junior Jolie Weinschreider and senior Devon St. John capturing All-Conference honors.

Jose Alfaro was the team’s head coach with Vincent Tannazzo serving as the assistant coach. The Blue Devils won six games overall. St. John, Weinschreider and Cameron Smith were the team captains.

St. John led the offense with 19 goals and three assists. “Devon is a natural leader, strong willed and a top player in the county,” Alfaro said. “She led by example and is a positive role model for the future of the program.”

Smith tallied four goals and three assists. “Cameron anchored our midfield for most of the season until she was sidelined with an injury. She is a captain who led by example. A healthy Cameron is a top player in the county.

Sophomore midfield Madyn Kalb scored eight goals and added four assists. “Madyn is a natural soccer player; multidimensional and can play any part of the field. She’s great at attack and defense. There’s a bright future for Madyn. I can only see her game and stats growing next year.”

Eighth grade goalkeeper Brianna Purcell recorded 140 saves. “Brianna stepped into a demanding position as an eighth grade goalie on varsity,” Alfaro said. “She is mature beyond her years; soft spoken, but focused between the posts. “

A 5-5 draw with Lindenhurst was a season highlight. “Down 4-0 with a few minutes left in the half, Devon St. John scored to take us 4-1 into the half. We made it 4-2 before Lindenhurst scored their fifth goal. Slowly, but surely, we started a comeback where we scored three unanswered goals and finished the game, 5-5.”

The roster was young with an eighth grader and six freshmen. “This team was a pleasure to coach, young, gifted and ready for what the future brings to them,” Alfaro said. “Eager to learn a different style. We have laid the groundwork for bright seasons ahead.”

The Huntington JV also turned in a strong season. With five varsity players graduating next June, spots will open on the roster for players to move up.

“We are returning 10 starters,” Alfaro said. “Our goals are to compete for the league and county titles.”
