Huntington UFSD’s College Awareness Day Set
November 15 , 2024
College Awareness Day is coming to Huntington UFSD. Organizers hope it will serve to both inform and spur discussions among teachers and students about post high school studies and career possibilities.
Huntington teachers and counselors really do believe that it’s never too early to start thinking about the future, even if you are in elementary school. While college is probably one of the last things on the mind of a young student, beginning to build a foundation of knowledge and taking stock of a person’s own interests is a worthwhile pursuit at any age the faculty members claim.
The district-wide event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26. “The goal of this program is to foster early college awareness and encourage meaningful conversations about post-secondary planning both in school and at home,” said Ricky V. Papandrea, Jr., Ed.D., district director of school counseling and testing, K-12.
Teachers and support staff are encouraged to participate by wearing their college attire and sharing their personal college experiences with students.
The Huntington High School guidance department will also be hosting its annual Alumni Day on November 26. A panel of alumni will be speaking with current high school students about their experiences.
“Following this event, Huntington alumni will visit the K-6 schools to share their college journeys and experiences with our younger students,” Dr. Papandrea said.
Teachers are expected to post the names of the colleges they attended outside their rooms and wear college apparel to promote discussions and contribute to the spirit of the day.
Morning announcements in individual school buildings will encourage students to explore colleges and discuss possibilities with their counselor or teacher.
