Huntington Girls’ Basketball Set for Try-outs

November 13, 2024

The Huntington High School varsity girls’ basketball team is once again expected to be one of Suffolk’s best with several returning veterans and a cast of exciting newcomers. Try-outs for the varsity and JV teams begin Monday, November 18 at 3 p.m. in the high school gym.

All Huntington High School girls are invited to try-out. Tryouts will be held daily from 3:00-5:30 p.m. for at least three days or until the team is selected. Once rosters are finalized, practices will be held Monday through Friday from 3-5:30 p.m. and on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Students trying out on November 18hould come prepared to play with shorts, t-shirt and sneakers. Every prospective player needs to submit a parent permission form.

A new coaching staff is in place for the season. It features Perry Marinelli as varsity head coach; Alyssa Adomaites as varsity assistant coach and Leah Morawski as JV head coach. Megan Marinelli is a varsity team volunteer assistant coach. Tim Madden and Hildi Stanford will coach the two Finley Middle School girls’ basketball teams.

A Northport High School graduate, Mr. Marinelli played football at Springfield College in Massachusetts before graduating from SUNY Oneonta. He later earned a master’s degree and teaching certification at CUNY Queens College.

The sideline mentor’s first coaching job was as a volunteer assistant with the Huntington varsity girls’ basketball team. The next year he led the Blue Devil JV to a 16-4 record and captured JV League Coach of the Year honors.

For the past six years he has worked at Northport High School as the JV coach and varsity assistant. During that time the JV team compiled a record of 94-10 and Mr. Marinelli was named JV League Coach of the Year four separate times.

While working with the Northport varsity, the Tigers won the county championship in 2020 and the team reached the Suffolk finals four times in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The varsity had a record of 90-12 during the time Mr. Marinelli worked in the Northport program.

“I am so excited and honored to be given the opportunity to lead this prestigious Huntington Blue Devil girls’ basketball program” Mr. Marinelli said. “I believe this program has a lot of potential to be one of the best in Suffolk County. We have a lot of players returning, but we are still a young team overall with a lot of potential and room for growth, which I think is reflected in the staff as well. We want to present an image of positivity. We want to be passionate and energetic.”
