Woodhull School Students Celebrate Veterans

November 12  , 2024

Veterans Day 2024 will always be remembered by Woodhull Intermediate School students participating in the Learners Who LEAD program. The youngsters painted rocks with inspirational messages and poppies, created heartfelt cards and designed American flag murals to honor and thank local veterans.

“These items were delivered to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1469 on Pulaski Road in Huntington Station and the VA Hospital in Northport,” Woodhull Principal Stephanie Campbell said. “Our students felt proud to give back and the veterans were deeply touched by the thoughtful gifts.”

“World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France,” according to the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs. “However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of ‘the war to end all wars.’”

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11, regardless of the specific day of the week it falls on. It’s “a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” according to the VA.
