Washington School Celebrates Wolfie’s Birthday
November 5 , 2024
Washington Primary School likes to do things “big.” The school on Whitson Road in Huntington Station has been standing tall since September 1954. Seven decades later it’s just as important to Huntington UFSD and the community as it ever was.
There’s always something new and exciting at Washington to keep the school’s students pumped up and with a spring in their step.
“Washington Primary School celebrated its beloved mascot, Wolfie with a school-wide birthday party,” Principal Michelle Richards said. Washington Winners decorated Wolfie birthday hats and lined the main hallway to cheer on Wolfie. They sang the ‘Happy Birthday’ song, chanted ‘Wolfie! Wolfie!’ and had a chance to exchange hugs and high-fives.”
Washington’s 375 students are worthy successors to the thousands of school alums that graced the building’s classrooms, halls, playground, gym and cafeteria over the years.
“Wolfie was reintroduced to the Washington family four years ago,” Dr. Richards said. “His name was selected through a lesson on the democratic process; specifically voting. The lesson took place leading up to Election Day in 2020. The popular vote deemed Wolfie the name of the Washington Wolverine!”
Dr. Richards is Washington’s ninth principal in its 70 year history. She has been at the helm of the school since July 2018. She was preceded by Leslie E. Read (1954 to 1966), Jack Abrams (1966 to 1969), Stephen Good (1969 to 1970), Olga Smith (1970 to 1991), John J. Finello (1991 to May 2000), Lois Markland (May 2000 to 2005), Jeffrey Kasper (2005 to 2006), Marsha Neville (2006 to 2018).
