New World Club Helps Newcomers Navigate New Surroundings
November 1 , 2024
Interest continues to run high in Huntington High School’s New World Club, which has welcomed new members excited to participate in the group’s mission. The organization assists students who are new to the country in adjusting to Huntington High School and navigating other lifestyle changes through mentorship.
New and continuing members are eager to participate in the club’s activities and make a difference in the lives of their peers. Under the guidance of new faculty advisor Marlo Romero and an executive board that features co-Presidents Heileen Torres and Katie Sorto; Secretary Julia Aldas; Treasurers Sofia Rodriguez Moreira and Julia Goodwin; Public Relations Coordinator Emely Herrera and Event Coordinator Kevin Dominguez, the club is well-positioned for a successful year ahead.
The club serves as a vital resource for newcomers in various ways, including one-on-one mentoring, where students can get to know each other both inside and outside of school and class mentoring, which helps ensure that classrooms run smoothly. In this program, mentors assist teachers by redirecting students and maintaining engagement, creating a positive and productive learning environment.
“Together, we can support newcomers as they navigate their transition, ensuring they feel welcomed and included in our vibrant school community,” Mr. Romero said. “Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience and as a community, we strive to offer our support and guidance. A mentor is someone who provides guidance, encouragement and support aimed at developing both the competence and character of the mentee.”
The club is committed to continual growth. New members are welcome at any time. Interested students can visit Mr. Romero in room 110 or reach out to Ms. Torres or Ms. Sorto Cabrera.
“New and previous members recently attended training and collaborated in brainstorming new ideas and strategies about mentorship, sharing their hopes and aspirations for the club, while discussing the essential qualities of an effective mentor,” Ms. Torres said. “They provided feedback on how to effectively communicate their goals to classmates, utilizing the ‘glow or grow’ approach where a ‘glow’ represents a positive comment and a ‘grow’ offers constructive suggestions for improvement. This training session proved to be very successful, as all members actively participated and dedicated significant effort, creating an interactive learning experience that prepared the mentors for their important roles.”
The club intends to sponsor field trips for mentors and mentees as a team bonding experience. Fundraising events are also planned to amass monies for senior scholarship awards.
“Although some people may not be aware of the club, it offers a fantastic opportunity to meet new people while enhancing Spanish speaking skills, all while newcomers benefit from improving their English,” Ms. Sorto Cabrera said. “The members of this club are not only enthusiastic about fostering community connections, but also possess strong leadership abilities that enrich the experience for everyone involved.”
Soon after the recent training session ended, club members were already looking for new ways to further strengthen their interpersonal skills.
“Throughout their training session, participants collaborated to deepen their understanding of mentorship, discussing the responsibilities and significance of guiding others,” Ms. Torres said. “This exchange of knowledge and support creates a nurturing environment where individuals can grow, build confidence, and develop lasting friendships, ultimately strengthening the bonds within the community.”
The New World Club’s commitment to newcomers to Huntington is stronger than ever. The club proves daily the power and effectiveness of mentoring.
“Mentoring and being part of a community are super important for everyone’s growth,” Ms. Sorto Cabrera said. “When someone mentors you, they share their experiences and tips, helping you figure things out and gain confidence. It’s like having a coach who’s been through it all and wants to see you succeed. Plus, being in a community means you’re not alone; you have people cheering you on and learning with you. Together, you can celebrate the good times and support each other during tough moments. This sense of togetherness makes everything more fun and helps everyone become better versions of themselves!”
