Blue Devil Teams Win Section XI Sportsmanship Awards

March 22, 2024

Five winter season athletic teams at Huntington High School and J. Taylor Finley Middle School won Section XI Sportsmanship Awards. The designation reflects well on the players, coaches and fans of those Blue Devil squads.

Section XI, the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Suffolk County tabulated ratings issued by opposing coaches after each game/meet and announced the Huntington varsity and JV girls’ basketball teams; the varsity girls’ and boys’ fencing teams and the Finley- White girls’ basketball team all earned coveted sportsmanship honors. Section XI issued certificates that will be displayed at the high school and Finley.

The varsity girls’ basketball team is coached by Michael Kaplan and Marissa Bergmann with the JV girls’ squad coached by Alyssa Adomaites. The two Blue Devil varsity fending teams are coached by Michelle O’Brien and Vincent O’Garra. The Finley-White girls’ basketball team is coached by Hildi Stanford.

Huntington UFSD and its athletic department takes student, coach and fan sportsmanship seriously. One of the Huntington athletic program’s priorities is “to emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play.”

The Blue Devil athletic program’s core values touch upon the areas of excellence, integrity, teamwork, tradition, service, diversity, equity and inclusion and passion. The core value of integrity is accompanied by the statement: “We play by the rules and act with integrity, honesty and personal responsibility in everything we do.”
