Blue Devil Tennis Players Brave Cool Temperatures

March 21, 2024

Mild temperatures during the season’s opening week yielded to colder weather this week, but the Huntington High School varsity and junior varsity boys’ tennis teams soldiered on, practicing daily for two hours as the Blue Devils prep for their 14 meet schedule.

The Huntington varsity is coached by longtime court mentor Jamie Fishlow. Robert Gilmor III returns as the JV team’s coach. Both teams practice at the Cuppernull Court Complex at the high school, which features six courts.

The Huntington varsity hosts Central Islip on Monday in the season opener. Matches against Middle Country, Riverhead, Northport, Half Hollow Hills West, Harborfields, Half Hollow Hills East, Walt Whitman, Kings Park, Smithtown West, Smithtown East, Commack, Hauppauge and John H. Glenn will follow. The JV typically plays at the site opposite the varsity.

This year’s varsity team features freshman Jack Chiclacos; sophomores Ryan Donovan, Dalton Flynn, Marin Mullaly and Evan Persampire; juniors James Masler, Nicholas Plachta, Ryan Ramirez and Edgar Vidal Villalba and seniors Tyler Godin and Juan Vera.

The Huntington JV includes freshmen Lucas Biancardo, Nikolay Caldewell, Ronan Driscoll, Jackson Poli and Quinn Rinaldi; sophomores Kevin Dominguez, Eoin Charles and Jeremyah Leiva and juniors Estyven Arreaga Merida, Aiden Clarke and Samuel Soric.

Fishlow is pleased with how the 23 high school players are working. “It’s a great group,” he said.
