Finley Girls’ Gymnastics Opportunity is Available

March 18, 2024

For the first time ever, J. Taylor Finley Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls are expected to have an opportunity to participate in interscholastic gymnastics. Huntington UFSD and neighboring Harborfields are collaborating on a combined middle school team this spring.

Oldfield Middle School has offered girls’ gymnastics for many years. An invitation is now being extended for Finley Middle School girls to join with Oldfield to form a combined squad.

This is an exciting new opportunity for Finley girls to have fun participating in a great sport with an enthusiastic group of girls from Oldfield. Practices will be held daily at 3:!5 p.m. at Harborfields High School in the South Gym, which is outfitted with a full array of gymnastics equipment.

Huntington and Harborfields varsity team members get along exceedingly well. The two districts also combine in both girls and boys swimming and diving, girls and boys fencing and girls gymnastics.

The gymnastics season will run from Monday, March 25 to Thursday, May 23. Eight meets are scheduled for the team. There will be home contests against Oakdale/Ronkonkoma (May 3), Gelinas/Murphy (May 9), Copiague (May 14), West Babylon (May 16) and Hampton Bays (May 23) and away meets at Commack (April 30), Smithtown (May 7) and Babylon (May 21).

The middle school girls’ gymnastics collaboration makes sense. The two districts joined forces on the varsity level in 2022/23, allowing Huntington students to participate on high school girls’ gymnastics team for the first time in many years. Harborfields has fielded a girls’ gymnastics team for decades. After establishing a joint team, five Blue Devils joined the existing Harborfields team.

Huntington UFSD is hoping this new opportunity is embraced by Finley girls, who are sure to have an awful lot of fun participating in an exciting sport.

Those interested in participating on the Finley/Oldfield girls gymnastics team need to be cleared by Finley school nurse Kay Khohkar. Students must present proof of a physical exam within the past 12 months and submit a signed interval health history form.

For information about getting cleared/requalified for participation send a message to Mrs. Khokhar at kkhokhar@hufsd.edu.

Every student needs to get re-qualified by the school nurse prior to each sport season. The nurse can only clear a student-athlete who has the following forms on file:

1. Required NYS Health Examination Form (click for link)

Physical exams can be performed by private doctor or school doctor and are valid for one year.

2. Interval Health History for Sports Participation (English/Spanish) (click for link)

A new form is required for each season; must be completed by parent/guardian, signed in ink and dated within 30 days of the start of the season.

3. Parent Consent Form for Athletes (English/Spanish) (click for link)
