PARP Program Flourishing at Flower Hill School

March 15, 2024

This year’s PTA Pick-A-Reading-Partner (PARP) program at Flower Hill Primary School has given a boost to the daily practice of having students crack open a good book and enjoy the written word.

Superintendent Christian Bowen was a mystery reader at Flower Hill School.

A New York PTA sponsored program, PARP has been embraced by the Flower Hill PTA and fully backed by its membership. The program is designed to involve parents, caregivers and other adults in fostering a love of reading in children.

“PARP encourages reading partners to read to their children for at least 20 minutes a day, which will help develop strong reading habits and in turn, help children succeed in school,” Flower Hill Principal Cindy Siegel said.

This year’s PARP program kicked off at Flower Hill earlier this month. It runs through this week with the school-wide grand finale assembly set for March 27.

“This year, our theme is ‘Our Town, Our Story,’” Ms. Siegel said. “The school has been decorated to celebrate the Huntington community.  During PARP, students will learn about the many places and people that make Huntington great!”

Huntington UFSD Superintendent Christian Bowen and Assistant Superintendent Beth McCoy visited Flower Hill as mystery guest readers earlier this week.

“By the end of PARP, we will have had 160 mystery readers,” Ms. Siegel said.
