Huntington Returns to LI Physics Olympics
March 15, 2024
Following a decade long absence, Huntington High School has returned to the Physics Olympics competition program. It’s a one day competition that brings together teams of five students from high schools across Long Island in fierce and friendly competition hosted by the Long Island Physics Teachers Association.
Huntington’s team is coached by science teacher Joseph Monroy. Team members include Shaina Linker, Sam McGloin, Gavin Deegan, Colin Lennon and Brayan Santos-Mendez.
“We competed hard in all events in the competition as we were able to place second overall in the ‘Accelerate!’ event, which resulted in Huntington bringing home a trophy.”
The event required one member of the team to run at a constant acceleration of 0.5 m/s2. “I’m beyond proud of our team and what we accomplished at the Physics Olympics,” Mr. Monroy said. “We practiced multiple times after school and it’s clear that the practice paid off. Hopefully we can use this year as a platform to more success in next year’s Physics Olympics.”
Mr. Monroy has twin Bachelor of Science degrees in physics and in astronomy and planetary science. He has a master’s degree in physics education and an advanced graduate certificate in data and computational science. He completed his student teaching requirements in the South Huntington and Syosset school districts. He was a leave replacement teacher in Syosset prior to coming to Huntington UFSD.
