Washington School Goes Crazy for Reading
March 5, 2024
Washington Primary School is ready to go crazy for reading. This year’s PTA Pick-a-Reading Partner program is underway. This year’s theme is “Reading Land!”
“Our theme is inspired by the beloved ‘Candyland’ board game,” Principal Michelle Richards said. “Washington families decorated the hallways and transformed our school into a Candyland inspired wonderful world of reading!”
This year’s kick-off assembly focused on genres, parts of speech and everything English Language Arts. “Indiana Jamie, a reading archeologist, presented an engaging assembly for our ‘Washington Winners.’” Dr. Richards said.
“Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education,” states the New York State PTA. “Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. PARP is a program that asks a partner (parent, grandparent, babysitter, older sibling, cousin, friend, etc.) to read with a child for at least 20 minutes daily.”
Throughout the month of March, Washington students, faculty, staff and families will celebrate the joy of reading.
The entire PARP initiative at the school is sponsored by the Washington PTA, which is generously supporting the program on every possible level.
“We look forward to a successful PARP campaign,” Dr. Richards said. “Reading is the foundation of all understanding. It is important that our students experience the joy of reading so they can become life-long lovers of reading.”
“PARP, developed in 1978 by State Senator James Donovan, is a program that cements the necessary bond between the home and the school to encourage love of reading in our children,” according to the New York State PTA.
