H-ton Softball Enjoys Turnaround Season

June 4, 2024

The Blue Devil varsity softball team enjoyed a turnaround season, winning eight games and missing the playoffs by a whisker.

Coached by John J. Walsh and Eric Mininni, Huntington was captained by seniors Ruby Meidenman, Adriana Abbatiello and Kate Barba.

The Blue Devils lost four close games, including three by two-runs and another by a single run. “This was a young team with strong senior leadership,” Walsh said. Huntington was 5-3 in league play and 8-11 overall.

The squad was led by Meidenman, Isabella Holland Mia Molina and Karina Rodriguez. Meidenman was named to the All-County team with Holland being recognized as All-Division. Molina and Rodriguez both captured All-League honors.

Meidenman was an ace on the mound and is being considered for All-State honors. She struck out 205 batters this spring to bring her career total to 643. Holland led the team is batting and played well at shortstop and in the outfield.

Rodriguez proved to be a welcome addition to the varsity. Only an eighth grader, she played catcher and carried a big bat. She will be a key returnee next spring.

The Blue Devils will also return current freshmen Gemma Bedell, Amanda Ganley, Jocelyn Thorbourne and Holland and sophomores Emily Barba and Keysy Diaz Campos. Molina will also be coming back for her senior year.

Walsh hopes off-season workouts will help develop the returning team, including a new No. 1 starting pitcher.
