AP Spanish Class Brings Literature to Life in NYC

December 13, 2024

Teacher Elizabeth Casazza’s Advanced Placement Spanish Literature class at Huntington High School embarked on an unforgettable trip to New York City to experience a live performance of Federico García Lorca’s iconic play, La Casa de Bernarda Alba.

Despite being 100 years old, Garcia Lorca’s work remains strikingly relevant, sparking discussions about societal norms, repression and family dynamics that resonate today.

As part of the AP Spanish Literature & Culture course, students tackle 38 texts spanning from medieval to modern times. In preparation for the trip, the class studied La Casa de Bernarda Alba, analyzing Garcia Lorca’s use of symbolism and dramatic tension. Reenacting scenes in class helped students connect with the play’s themes of power, tradition, and gender roles, enriching their understanding before seeing it performed live.

“The performance gave us a deeper look into the characters and the themes,” senior Anne Tyrell said. “It was a great experience.”

The class also embraced the holiday spirit by visiting the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, enjoying hot chocolate and waffles at Bryant Park and admiring the exterior and interior architecture of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

“This trip was the perfect mix of learning and fun,” Mrs. Casazza said.
