December 6, 2024

Nina Fascilla has a knack for making the Huntington High School community proud. The senior has been selected as a delegate to the United States Youth Senate through a rigorous application and interview process. She will represent New York as one of just two students chosen in the state.

Nina Fascilla is president of the Huntington High School student government and the Class of 2025.

“This March, I will be going to Washington, D.C. for one week with the 103 other delegates from across the country to attend US Senate hearings and dinners, meet with the president, Supreme Court and other government officials,” Ms. Fascilla said.

The United States Senate Youth Program, established in 1962 by U.S. Senate Resolution, is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service.

The 63rd annual United States Senate Youth Program’s Washington Week is set for Washington, D.C. from March 1-8, 2025. Two student leaders from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity will spend a week in Washington experiencing their national government in action.

Students must be actively serving in high-level elected or appointed leadership positions to qualify to apply. Ms. Fascilla is president of Huntington High School’s student government as well as serving as president of the Class of 2025.

Ms. Fascilla and her fellow student delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies. They typically participate in meetings with the president and a justice of the US Supreme Court.

All transportation, hotel and meal expenses are provided by The Hearst Foundations. Ms. Fascilla and each of her fellow delegates will also be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.

President of Huntington High School’s mock trial team that won Suffolk titles in 2022 and 2023 and was the county runner-up in 2024, Ms. Fascilla intends to attend college in the Washington, D.C. area. She plans to study political science and eventually pursue a career in in law and politics.

“I decided to pursue the Youth Senate because I have always thrived off of leadership,” Ms. Fascilla said. “Being that I’m unable to vote, I wanted to find another outlet to pursue my political passions and make change. This will be a fantastic opportunity to learn, make connections and prepare for my future career.”

The teenager has also starred in Huntington’s Virtual Enterprise and music programs and has even served as a lifeguard at the Lloyd Neck Bath Club.

“Huntington has really been the best environment for my growth,” Ms. Fascilla said.
