Boys’ Volleyball Players Asked to Indicate Interest

December 3, 2024

Huntington UFSD is currently considering reinstating its varsity boys’ volleyball team, which was discontinued many years ago. There is a boys’ volleyball team at J. Taylor Finley Middle, but it is a winter season sport on the modified level. Varsity boys’ volleyball is contested in the fall season on the high school level.

There has been interest from students in recent years, but not even to warrant reinstating the sport of boys’ volleyball. Huntington UFSD has discussed affiliating with a nearby district, but due to the size of its athletic program, that district has declined to enter into a combined team agreement.

A new burst of interest has Huntington UFSD officials once again studying the feasibility of creating a Blue Devil varsity boys’ volleyball team. Athletic officials recently met with representatives of interested students. If the program is reinstated it will most likely practice and play home matches in the Finley gym.

The Finley gym contains floor markings, a new net post system, a scoreboard and a Hudl camera to film and livestream matches. Girls’ JV and varsity volleyball teams currently use the high school gym in the fall season. Finley doesn’t have an indoor sport in the fall so the gym is open.

As the athletic department gathers more information, those who would be interested in joining a reestablished boy’s volleyball team are asked to send an email message to Athletic Director Jim Hoops at jhoops@hufsd.edu. Students are also free to stop into the athletic office and indicate their interest in the program.
