Blue Devil Baseball Captures Series with Bellport

April 29, 2024

Great pitching performances by Henry Gerberg and Will Donaghy helped propel the Huntington varsity baseball team to capture its first series of the season as the Blue Devils topped Bellport in back to back games.

Gerberg, a promising sophomore, started and hurled six innings, surrendering just four hits and one earned run. Junior Harry Uvena banged out four hits and Donaghy, a talented freshman, collected three hits and a run batted in.

Sophomore Presley Moss and junior Griffin Kanzer had two hits and two RBIs each in the 6-1 victory. Senior catcher Harry Baliber also had two hits.

Senior Dylan Hayden executed a perfect squeeze bunt to get the scoring started for the Blue Devils. Gerberg helped his pitching efforts by adding a double that started a rally to get the first runs of the game across for Huntington.

“Henry pitched great,” head coach John Romano said. “This was his best outing of the season. He pitched to contact and trusted our defense to make the plays behind him.

Freshman Joey Perotti also had a hit in the game as the Blue Devils pounded out 15 hits in the win.

A few days later, Donaghy threw a complete game allowing two runs and five hits in the 9-2 win. Senior Kaedon Halbeisen led the team with two hits and three RBIs. Uvena smacked two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Kanzer also had two hits and Dylan Hayden had an RBI. “This game was a total team effort,” Romano said. “We turned multiple double plays throughout the game and got the big hit multiple times in big spots.”

Huntington faced Bellport’s ace pitcher twice over six days and the Blue Devils won both games. “That pitcher was one of the best we’ve seen all year and our guys rose to the occasion and battled against one of the league’s better pitchers,” Romano said. “We’ve been playing much better baseball over the course of the last two weeks. We’re staying in games against some really good teams.”
