Dual Language Parent Engagement Night is Fun

April 11, 2024

Flower Hill Primary School’s indefatigable dual language teachers worked to organize and then coordinate a math workshop in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School library that proved to be both educational and fun.

Billed as a “parent engagement night,” the initiative brought together students and their families, who rotated through various centers, enjoying games like Bingo and Bump, and mastering addition and subtraction with math mats

Flower Hill DL teachers Patricia Haack, Erika Brignati, Arlette Epstein, Glenn Edwards and dual language program coordinator and teacher Desire Lahoz facilitated the recent workshop.

The session opened with a presentation on the math skills students in grades K-3 learn. “Then, I gave the instructions on the math centers and how they would run,” Ms. Lahoz said.

Participants rotated through centers named Bump and Math Mats, which allowed students to practice their addition and multiplication abilities and “Números en Español,” which helped the youngsters identify numbers in Spanish.

“After the math centers were completed, I gave parents helpful tips on how they can engage with their children and help them with math at home during everyday life (shopping at the store, rolling dice, playing dominoes, etc.),” Ms. Lahoz said.

Another dual language program parent engagement night is scheduled for April 16 at Jefferson Primary School with still another set for April 30 at Washington Primary School.

The recent session is the STEM library was fun, fun, fun according to the youngsters. “Todos tuvieron una divertida noche de matematicas,” said Flower Hill Principal Cindy Siegel in the spirit of the evening.
