Blue Devils Survive as Huntington Topples HHH, 16-10

April 8, 2024

The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team survived an uneven performance to topple Half Hollow Hills on a cold and windy day at Blue Devil Stadium last Saturday, 16-10.

The Blue Devils seemed out of sync for most of the game, but Huntington was still good enough to win. Players chose to focus on the positive during timeouts and at halftime. While they knew they were slightly out of step, they pulled it together for an important league victory.

Sophomore Jolie Weinschreider led the Blue Devils with four goals and an assist. Senior Kayleigh Bender had three goals and a pair of assists. Juniors Sabrina Boyle and Devon St. John scored three goals each.

Bridget Callery (1g, 2a), Jenna Italiano (2g) and Grace Gordon (1a) also contributed points to the offense. Goalies Juliet Johnson and Andie DiGioia combined in the cage for the win. Johnson had a pair of interceptions along with four saves.

Huntington led 9-6 at halftime, but Half Hollow Hills remained close, including scoring two goals to start the second half, which cut the Blue Devil lead to a single goal at 9-8. Huntington went on to score seven of the game’s remaining nine goals.

On a day when the Blue Devils really had to work for the win, Huntington’s players chose to focus on what they did right rather than take an overly critical eye toward their performance.

“It was tough game and Half Hollow Hills played well, but we did what we had to do to get the ‘W,’” St. John said.
