H-ton Boys’ Track Opens Season with Victory

April 5, 2024

The Huntington boys’ track and field team withstood a late surge by visiting Bellport to top the Clippers in the season opener at Blue Devil Stadium earlier this week, 78-59.

Huntington boys' track and field head coach Ronald Wilson.

Huntington won nine separate events and took second in three. One of the best races of the day came in the 1600m run. Freshman Eric Heinz and senior Ethan Goleski were put to the test when Bellport’s two runners took the lead. The Blue Devil duo kept pace behind them and after three laps, a Bellport runner continued to lead with Heinz right on his heels.

Goleski passed the Clipper’s second runner and was now in third. Coming off the last turn, Heinz began to put pressure on the Bellport runner by passing him. The Bellport runner responded well and it became a battle to the finish line. Heinz held on for the upset crossing the line first in a time of 4:55.2. Goleski finished in third with a time of 5:07.5. “What a race,” said Huntington head coach Ronald E. Wilson, who is assisted by Eli Acosta and Haidee Ganz-Bonhurst.

David Dax, Jahmar Francis, Nikolai Lulewich, Johan Fajardo and John Genova all displayed great senior leadership while competing well and winning multiple events.

The Huntington 4x100m relay consisting of Dax, Titan Elysee, Francis and Nick Rosan swept to victory, too. “It was a great day to be a Blue Devil, despite a little rain here and there,” Wilson said.

Huntington competed in an invitational at Amityville last weekend and captured a pile of gold, silver and bronze medals. “They wore their medals proudly,” Wilson said..
