Children’s Author Shares Book at Washington School

May 30, 2023

Children’s author Valerie Goldstein recently shared her book and her life experiences with the second graders at Washington Primary School. The students were able to hear the book read aloud by the author, who was brought to the school by the district’s arts-in-education program.

Ms. Goldstein is the author of “Violet’s Victory,” an autobiographical picture book about a young girl with lavender hair, who longs to win a track and field race, despite her need to utilize forearm crutches. She discovers a purple hand-cycle and trains diligently each day.

“With perseverance, a dream and her new-found adaptive equipment, will Violet accomplish her victory?” a teaser for the book asks readers. Washington students were anxious to learn the answer and dived into the volume.

Ms. Goldstein engaged the students in a discussion about how everyone in the world is different, unique and special. “‘Violet’s Victory’ helps our students’ understanding the importance of demonstrating Washington’s No. 1 expectation; be kind to others,” Principal Michelle Richards said. “This interactive visit allowed students to engage in discussion and read parts of the book to each other.”

Dr. Richards and Washington’s faculty and support staff members like to keep learning real for students. They are all united in looking for ways to keep the 300-plus youngsters at the school excited and enthusiastic about classroom instruction.
