May 19, 2023

The Huntington boys’ track and field team showcased its best young performers at the Suffolk Frosh/Soph Championships at Longwood this week. Ninth grade sensation Ethan Lawless captured both the shot put and discus events to pace the Blue Devils.

On his second attempt in shot, Lawless separated himself from the field with a toss of 45 feet. In discus, he threw a personal best distance of 128-08 feet to win a gold medal. “He is currently ranked No. 1 in shot put among all freshmen in New York with a mark of 46-07.5 feet and No. 2 in the state in discus among ninth graders with a throw of 128-08 feet,” said Ronald E. Wilson, Huntington’s head coach.

Matt Rose placed second in shot put with a personal best effort that measured 39-08 feet and Jean Riboul placed a close seventh with a toss of 33-05 feet.

Geuniel Elysee finished second in the 110m high hurdles in a personal best time of 17.22 seconds and was second in the 400m intermediate hurdles in 1:04.53.

Huntington stayed and neck and neck with heavily favored Connetquot until near the end of the meet with West Babylon and Shoreham-Wading River in third and fourth place, respectively. “It was truly a great job by these young men,” Wilson said. “Our distance runner, Max Carino has done an absolute phenomenal job this season, but unfortunately illness sidelined him and he was unable to attend. Having him in both the 1600m and 800m would have definitely given us a greater shot at winning it all. It does bode well for the future!”
