Blue Devil Boys’ Lax Wins on Senior Day

May 8, 2023

Anthony Annunziata scored three goals and SammyMac Arner stopped 13 shots to lead the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team past visiting Patchogue-Medford on Senior Day at Blue Devil Stadium, 7-5.

Huntington struggled at times as the Raiders frustrated the Blue Devils and kept the score close and the game interesting.

Huntington was coming off one of its biggest wins in recent years, a one goal home victory earlier in the week over three-time defending Suffolk champ Northport. But on Senior Day, the Blue Devils were simply not going to be denied as the team did just enough to win its ninth game of 2023 and march closer to a playoff berth.

The team traded first period goals before Huntington went ahead 4-3 by halftime. But Patchogue-Medford wasn’t about to give up and the red and black played hard until the final horn.

Annunziata’s (26 goals; 8 assists) three goals led the offense, which was added by Peter Breingan’s (12g; 1a) two goals and an assist and goals by Mikey Kline (14g; 24a) and Colin Lennon (18g; 9a). Aidan Carrello (5g; 3a), Tyler Johnson (3g; 6a) and Timmy McDonald (5g; 1a) also contributed assists. Arner now has 130 saves this season.

The Blue Devils nine seniors were honored during a pre-game ceremony on the field. Riley Ackerman, Anthony Annunziata, SammyMac Arner, Brett Bender, Peter Breingan, Aidan Carrello, Tyler Johnson, Michael Kline and Silvio Torres were all recognized by head coach Julian Watts, who spoke about each of the players before they were joined by their parents and together walked out to midfield.

Many of the seniors have played together since elementary school and they’ve formed a bond with each other that won’t be broken by graduation.

A post-game party outside the fieldhouse included an array of foods as dozens of players and parents celebrated the special day for two hours.
