HHS Field Day 2023 is Sensational

June 15, 2023

Huntington High School’s Class of 2023 enjoyed a spectacular day on Tuesday, celebrating with each other at a breakfast on the Blue Devil Stadium track, signing each other’s yearbooks and competing during field day activities spread across the turf field.

Hundreds of seniors participated in the festivities, which began early in the morning with a breakfast that included all sorts of food and beverage choices, including waffles with whipped cream and blueberries, bagels, hard rolls with choices of meats, juices, etc. Students enjoyed the food while organizing their teams and penning messages in yearbooks.

The group later moved to the bleachers where Principal Brenden Cusack and physical education teachers provided the seniors with an overview of the day and the events.

Department coordinator Michael Marinello and physical education teacher Alex Nelson took the lead with assists from faculty colleagues Lauren Blackburn, Maria Canino, Shea Scully and Chris Taylor and a group of underclassmen. Several other teachers volunteered to help out during free periods.

“Field Day was an amazing celebration of our senior year,” Sophie Bradford said. “We had so much fun. Between the costumes and the games everyone was laughing the whole time. Big thanks so everyone organizing it!”

Students formed 17 teams and competed in an assortment of individual and team events and sports, including many field day classics along with new versions of old favorites. Team members wore matching outfits and were especially creative in their dress.

“Our team, Shine Thieves, which consisted of Cece Kye, Lauren Gennarelli, Sana Amin, Kender Edouazin, Nikolai Seferian, Charlie Siepel, Sam James, Dylan Brinn, Aria Hannah, Rachel Morina, Haileigh Smith and Laura Curtin thoroughly enjoyed the activities and had a blast not only working as a team, but enjoying our last day with amazing peers and friends,” Nadeera Ali said.

The Huntington Booster Club generously provided the seniors with a midday pizza lunch. There were Italian ices, too. Everyone had fun on a beautiful spring day. No one seemed to complain when temperatures started inching up.

“It was so much fun,” Grace Agrillo said. “What a great way to wrap up our last day of high school.”

When it was over, everyone was physically drained, but all the seniors seemed to go home happy.

“It was truly an honor to wrap up our senior year with a glorious victory over my fellow classmates,” said Riley Ackerman who played on the winning team. “We proved our athletic and academic prowess over our class. Team Fulcrum and the rest of the student body was grateful for having this opportunity to compete and have fun. We would also like to thank our faculty and staff for all of their rigorous  work setting up and cleaning up, as well as feeding us some fine cuisines.”

The seniors really took delight in spending time together as one large group. They know they opportunities to do so are dwindling fast so they enjoyed each other’s company.

“Field Day was an exhilarating culmination of our senior year; a day filled with spirited camaraderie and fierce competition,” Mikah Schuller said. “From dawn until dusk, our class formed tight-knit groups and wholeheartedly threw ourselves into a medley of diverse activities, each one offering its own unique thrill. Though our team didn’t emerge as victors, the sheer joy and excitement we experienced throughout the day made it an unforgettable event. As we engaged in friendly rivalry, the bonds between classmates grew stronger, transcending mere competition and fostering a sense of unity that will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on our memories of high school. From relay races that had us sprinting with unbridled determination, to tug-of-war battles where sheer strength and strategy were put to the test, every challenge brought its own dose of adrenaline and excitement. And let's not forget the infectious laughter and cheers that echoed across the field, invigorating our spirits and adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the proceedings.”

Mr. Schuller summed up how many of his classmates felt when he said that although the team he played on didn’t capture first place, “what truly mattered was the memories we created, the bonds we fortified and the unadulterated joy we experienced as a class. Today's field day was a testament to the vibrant spirit of our senior class, and it served as a fitting farewell to our high school journey.”

Senior Field Day has quickly become a Huntington High School tradition. “I loved seeing all the different team themes,” Erin Scanlon said. “I had a lot of fun. It was definitely a memorable way to end our senior year.”

It was clearly a day that the current seniors will savor for a very long time. “Today’s field day was a lot of fun and was such a great way to end our Huntington careers,” Gianna Forte said.
