Charlotte Gordon Wins State Administrators Award

Charlotte Gordon is one of the shining stars at Huntington High School. She has captured the New York State Retired School Administrators and Supervisors Award, which is presented annually to a junior “who exemplifies the very best in the community and civic responsibility, school service and concern for others.”
One of the founding members of Huntington’s Social Justice Ambassadors Club, Ms. Gordon currently serves on the organization’s board of directors. “As a social justice ambassador, I've been able to attend conferences alongside my other socially-conscious peers and brainstorm ways to enact beneficial changes to our schools and communities,” she said.
A Huntington New World Club mentor, Ms. Gordon has been helping students that are new to the country acclimating to the high school environment. On Saturday’s she tutors elementary grade students who need a little bit of extra help with their reading and math skills.
“Being a bilingual graduate of the dual language program, I am able to speak to them in Spanish as well as English to ensure their understanding,” she said.
The current vice president of the high school’s Key Club chapter, she was recently elected president of the organization for the 2023/24 school year. Ms. Gordon is also senior editor of The Dispatch, the high school’s student newspaper. She will be the publication’s editor-in-chief next year.
“Last spring, I was selected to participate in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference at Adelphi University, where I learned tactics to advocate for myself and my community,” Ms. Gordon said. “I would like to thank my guidance counselor, Ms. Lauren Brunoni, who nominated me for this incredible award. I’m so grateful for everything she’s helped me with all throughout my high school career. I’d also like to extend my gratitude to my parents, who taught me the importance of leaving the world a better place than I found it.”
Ms. Gordon is set to intern this summer at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Dolan DNA Learning Center to prepare aliquots and materials for the scientific camps that are made available to students during the warmer months.
“On summer weekends, I will venture to Oyster Bay to work as a bookseller at Theodore’s Books, owned by former Congressman Steve Israel,” Ms. Gordon said. “I will also be traveling to Sweden, Denmark and London, as well as working on my college applications. As of right now, I am interested in studying molecular biology or neuroscience, I’m looking into different undergraduate programs that offer these fascinating areas of study.”
