Jefferson Walks to End Childhood Cancer

June 9, 2023

Jefferson Primary School’s third grade leadership team has organized an awareness raising and fundraising walk to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital next Tuesday in the traffic circle in front of the building.

The third grade leadership team is led by Dr. Kathleen Ozimkowski and Julie Dooher. Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide has thrown her support behind the group as it tries to “change the world.”

“It is with great enthusiasm that we share a beautiful community outreach effort that all of our amazing Jefferson Jaguars and their families are invited to participate in,” states the event flyer. “Jefferson Primary has partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to raise money for children and their families who are faced with childhood cancer. We will host a Walk to End Childhood Cancer fundraiser.”

Unlike many hospital, the majority of St. Jude’s funding comes from individual contributions. “Our Jefferson Primary students will walk around the school flagpole circle holding handmade signs, cheering for and celebrating the power of unity and teamwork in making our world a better place,” states the event flyer.

All parents and family members are welcome to watch their child’s class walk or are welcome to walk with them. “Our goal is to promote awareness and raise funds for children with childhood cancers and for the family members who love and cherish them,” Dr. Ozimkowski said. “There is something quite special, unique and quite inspiring about young children seeking to make a difference in the world.”

In the run-up to Friday’s walk, Jefferson students learned about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital “and the beauty in kids seeking to change the world around them,” according to organizers.
