Huntington’s Art Honor Society Thinks Locally

June 1, 2023

Huntington High School’s Art Honor Society has sometimes pursued projects that have had a global reach, but more recently the organization has been thinking locally.

This year, the group wanted to organize an art project that had a local impact. The society’s members kicked around some ideas and settled on one that captured the imagination of everyone.

“We decided to support a cause I am passionate about,” Art Honor Society President Talia Addeo said. “I have a very strong love for animals and couldn’t help but think about the shelter pets in our community who needed homes.”

The senior reached out to the Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Rescue Center in Huntington about creating artwork of some of their adoptable pets. From there, the Art Honor Society worked to create portraits of dogs and cats who were awaiting their families forever. This was done with the goal of promoting potential adoption for these animals and providing the shelter with works of art to enjoy.

“As the advisor, I am very proud that we were able to share our artwork with a local organization,” faculty advisor Jenna Merget said. “I believe that Talia’s passions have provided the society with a great project for the future. I hope we continue working with the Little Shelter.”

Among the Art Honor Society members that participated in the project were Sofia Gomez Calderon, Owen Hodgkinson, Angelique Mendoza Palma, Carolina Ramos Saravia, Talia Addeo, Idalis La Paz Nunez, Lilianna LaVertu, Jamyn Husselbeck and Anibella Fazin.

“Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter nestled on six wooded acres in Huntington,” according to the organization’s website. “We have been dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and cats and placing them into loving forever homes since 1927. Age, physical condition, and socialization issues are never criteria for rescuing a dog or cat whose life is in jeopardy.”
