New Alum Sophie Bradford to Study in Europe

July 28, 2023

Sophie Bradford is heading off on a new adventure. Following a great four year run, the Huntington High School Class of 2023 member plans to study natural sciences at the University of York in the UK.

“Sophie Bradford exemplifies what it means to be a student athlete,” said science teacher Sarah Hall, who coaches the winter and spring season girls’ track and field teams. “Throughout the three years I have known her, she has continued to prioritize her schoolwork while excelling on the track as an athlete and a teammate. Without fail, Sophie is one of the first on the team to cheer as loud as possible for each and every athlete in their respective events and the first to tell a teammate to pull out her books during down time or on the bus to help them with a class they are struggling in. No matter what, she puts in every effort to be at all practices and meets, often willing to meet before or after practice time to complete a workout if she has work or extra help.”

An Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, Ms. Bradford ran on Huntington’s cross country, winter and spring girls’ track and field teams. She specialized in distance events and relays.

“Sophie takes great pride in her academic endeavors as well,” Coach Hall said. At track meets, she displayed exceptional leadership skills in helping the newer and younger athletes with making sure they are at their events on time, warming up and ready to go. She even helped out other teams when they asked her for assistance, showing great sportsmanship and respect for all athletes in the sport.”

Inducted into six separate honor societies, Ms. Bradford said the key to her success has been maintaining a good balance between academics, sports and her social life. The teenager said she’s grateful for her “helpful teachers” and her family’s support. She was recognized as a Distinguished Senior after compiling an outstanding academic record.

President of the French Honor Society, a multiple recipient of the NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Award and a Habitat for Humanity volunteer who traveled to New Orleans to help rebuild housing there destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, Ms. Bradford enjoyed a very well-rounded experience at Huntington High School.

Ms. Bradford’s study of the natural sciences at the University of York will include biology, chemistry, physics, math and computing.
