Finley Softball Players Display Durability

July 26, 2023

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School softball team experienced some twists and turns this past spring. But the 15 player squad proved to be durable, playing hard throughout the 10 game schedule.

Early in the season, Finley coach Marissa Bergmann was injured at practice and was sidelined the rest of the way. Physical education teacher Jake Torres stepped into the position on short notice and his knowledge of the sport helped him provide the players with a great experience.

Eighth grader Anastacia Mennuto captained the team, which included seventh graders Millie Ciccotto, Bella Duke, Khloe Graham, Mia Gulino, Brianna Mata, Jaylah Morgan-Page, Taylor Peters, Karina Rodriguez and Jaime Uvena and eighth graders Sara Benitez, Lily Buscemi, Aubrie Godin, Talia Hayden and Eva Richter.

“Everyone did a great job contributing to the team,” Torres said. “The players worked hard and developed their skills and knowledge of softball. They were a pleasure to work with.”

The highlight of the season was a 10-5 victory at home over Candlewood. “Nine different players scored a run for Finley,” Torres said. “Karina Rodriguez pitched all seven innings and recorded six strikeouts. We clinched the win with a triple play. Taylor Peters caught a line drive and threw to Bella Duke at third for the second out and Bella threw to Anastacia Mennuto at first for the third out.”

With so many players set to return as eighth graders, Finley is looking to field a strong team next spring. “We are excited to have them back and to bring along a new group of incoming seventh graders,” Torres said.
