July 7, 2023

Fourteen Huntington High School graduating seniors were presented with Advanced Placement Capstone Achievement Awards by the district’s Chairman of Humanities Joseph Leavy. The teenagers completed a pair of rigorous full year courses.

Victoria Befumo (Temple University), Laura Curtin (University of Connecticut), Annika Galvin (Smith College), Angie Hernandez-Ramos (Middlebury College), Ella Kamenstein (University of Michigan-Ann Arbor), Cecilia Kye (Northeastern University), Keyla Maldonado (Binghamton University), Dandy Moreira (Suffolk Community College), Michaela O’Connell (Siena College), Brian Romero-Bonilla (Case Western Reserve University), Joshua Stephen (Delaware State University), Annalise Schettino (Adelphi University), Damanjit Singh (Marist College) and Evan Spagnoletti (University of Pennsylvania) were all honored.

The group was recognized at the high school’s senior scholarships and awards night ceremony that drew a crowd of about 300 to the auditorium.

The College Board’s AP Capstone is a diploma program featuring two full year courses: AP Seminar and AP Research.

“Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing and presenting,” according to the College Board. “Students who complete the two-year program can earn one of two different AP Capstone awards, which are valued by colleges across the United States and around the world.”

AP Seminar is a foundational course in which students explore the complexities of academic and real-world issues. AP Research allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest.
