Kathryn Montefusco Wins Brett Saltzman Scholarship Award
July 5, 2023
The Brett Saltzman Scholarship is presented in memory of a Huntington High School alum who passed away in August 2013. It’s awarded annually to a leading senior who intends to pursue college studies in a field related to mental health or who might have been affected in some way by mental health, including through family and friends.
This year’s $1,000 Saltzman scholarship award was presented to Class of 2023 member Kathryn Montefusco, who has been recruited by Villanova University to swim on its NCAA Division I team.
The scholarship presentation was made by Mr. Saltzman’s brother in law, Jeanpierre Caramanica at Huntington High School’s senior scholarships and awards ceremony in the auditorium before a crowd of about 300.
Mr. Saltzman was known for always having a smile for everyone as well as for displaying a young-hearted spirit.
Ms. Montefusco is a multi-time All-State swimmer and a Distinguished Senior, having compiled an exceptional academic and athletic record. She credits her success to her teachers, coaches and parents. Captain of the Blue Devil swimming team, she was inducted into several honor societies.
The teenager said that whether it was practice, homework or school assignments and projects, without her support network, the success she received would not have been possible.
Ms. Montefusco said she has enjoyed her classes, studying alongside her friends and learning from the high school’s “amazing teachers.”
