Laurel Bonn Wins HFD Frank Carino Award
July 03, 2023
Former Huntington Fire Department Chief Neil Getter presented the Frank Carino Award for Athletics to Class of 2023 member Laurel Bonn, one of the top high school field hockey and lacrosse players in the country. The award carries with it a $500 stipend.
Ex-Chief Getter made the presentation to Ms. Bonn at Huntington High School’s senior scholarships and awards ceremony. The Carino Award is given annually to the top athlete in the graduating class.
Valedictorian of Huntington’s Class of 2023, Ms. Bonn is headed to the University of Georgia. She plans to pursue a career in dentistry. The teenager said she believes the key to her success has been her grit and self-discipline.
While it is easy to lose motivation and feel overwhelmed with so many things on her plate, Ms. Bonn said she always reminds herself of her purpose. She believes that giving up would only let herself down and also let down those who support her.
An All-State and All-Northeast region field hockey players, Ms. Bonn was All-County and an Academic All-American in lacrosse.
“Laurel Bonn is the definition of exceptional and well-rounded,” said Katie Reilly, Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse varsity head coach. “She has excelled in the classroom and garnered herself the highest academic award one can receive in high school, valedictorian, while also being a top player on and captain of both the field hockey and lacrosse teams. She has been an inspiration to our younger players and youth showing that one can truly balance and excel at both athletics and academics. She is fearless and confident and is one of the most vocal players that I have ever coached. She is not afraid to lead and exemplifies what it means to leave it all out there. Huntington has been fortunate to have had Laurel represent the Blue Devils.”
