Keeping Kids Inspired with an Author Visit at Washington

Keeping kids inspired to embrace learning new things every day they step into a classroom is a challenge that Washington Primary School faculty and step take seriously.
Reading specialist Jeffrey Dicker recently hosted a virtual visit with Angela Dominguez, author of “Stella Díaz Has Something to Say,” for some of his third grade students.
“‘Stella Díaz Has Something to Say’ tells a heartwarming story based on Angela’s own experiences growing up Mexican-American,” Washington Principal Michelle Richards said. “The discussion included a read-aloud from the author, a short presentation and a Q&A session.”
Some of the questions the students asked were: “What was your favorite book as a child?” “What did you do at recess as a child?” “How did you become an author?” “What do you like to do when you are not writing books?”
“It was a great experience for my students to meet Angela Dominguez since she has a similar story to them,” Mr. Dicker said. “She was born in Mexico, moved to Texas and had to learn to speak English at a young age. She also talked about how she was a shy child and I feel that my students really connected to that as well.”
Keeping kids inspired to embrace learning with enthusiasm – that’s the goal. “At Washington we continue to find different ways to foster lifelong readers and learners as they explore various genres of books,” Dr. Richards said.
