Benjamin Edgar-McNerney is one of Huntington High School’s top students academically. The junior is mastering every subject while also participating in the co-curricular and athletic programs. His all-around excellence has been nothing short of spectacular.

Born in England, he came to the United States with his parents and siblings at the age of one. “My three brothers, all Huntington High School alumni, really shaped me into who I am today,” Mr. Edgar-McNerney said. “Growing up, I was always fascinated with how and why things work, causing me to be technologically inclined from a young age.”

The teenager is a teacher favorite and he is getting the encouragement and direction he needs from Huntington faculty members. “Mr. [Nicholas] Wagner, my AP Computer Science teacher, has really sparked my interest in the area,” Mr. Edgar-McNerney said.

Considering his formidable academic resume that grows by the day, it seems a safe bet that Mr. Edgar-McNerney is destined for one of the top tier universities in the United States.

“Although I have not really considered many specific colleges I wish to attend, I am seriously considering computer science as a major,” the teenager said.

Mr. Edgar-McNerney is a mainstay with Huntington High School’s varsity fencing team. A member of the Blue Devil marching band, he has been inducted into the Science, English, Social Studies, Math and National Honor Societies. He’s already planning on being a lab assistant with science teacher Danielle Raguzin as a senior.

“My favorite areas of study this year would have to be computer science and chemistry,” Mr. Edgar-McNerney said. He also volunteers with the high school’s Habitat for Humanity chapter and is a member of Huntington Robotics, the high school’s competitive robotics club team.

“So far, my experience at Huntington has been great,” Mr. Edgar-McNerney said. “I have been able to make friends and form bonds with all of my teachers, making my schooling more enjoyable.”

The junior has helped the Blue Devil fencing team develop into one of Suffolk’s better squads this winter. “Although no longer a coach here, one of last year’s fencing coaches, Burke Tomaselli really taught me a lot about the sport and made me the fencer I am today,” Mr. Edgar-McNerney said.

The teenager has taken to the road often to visit distant locales and even countries overseas. “My family has always loved to travel,” Mr. Edgar-McNerney said. “In past years, I have been to several countries in Europe.”

The teenager is among the top students in Huntington’s Class of 2024. He compiled an academic grade average in excess of 104.8 in the first marking period.

“Although I believe my future is still very undecided, I can certainly see myself working as a programmer or engineer,” Mr. Edgar-McNerney said.
