Southdown Bounds into 2023 with Sense of Wonder

january 11, 2023

The Southdown Primary School community bounded into 2023 with a sense of wonder and excitement. There’s something new each day at the building and that keeps students energized and enthusiastic. From classroom initiatives to social events sponsored by the PTA, there’s a lot on the agenda in the new year.

Southdown’s 2022/23 school year kicked off with a block party last September. “We had a great turnout with our families from the neighborhood,” Principal Jill Amott-Erwig. “Engaging families in school events will lead to students reaching their fullest potential. There are many great events at Southdown that are coordinated by Southdown’s PTA, Southdown staff and the surrounding Huntington community.

PTA fall events included things like the book fair and kindergarten and third grade socials, to name a few.

“Working together with our shared decision making team, our PTA and Pink Aid, we hosted our second annual walk-a-thon in October,” Ms. Amott-Erwig said. “This gives students the chance to learn about giving back to their community. Students walked and raised money to donate to Pink Aid, an organization that supports breast cancer patients while they undergo treatment.”

New Southdown music teacher Ashley Berrell, “did an amazing job with our holiday songfest concert,” Ms. Amott-Erwig said. “Our concert lifted the spirits of everyone around. The children were smiling and dancing while the audience cheered them on.”

Southdown rang in 2023 by setting new goals and making resolutions. “Students will continue to rise to the occasion when it comes to being creative in their writing through the avenue of ‘Southdown’s Word of the Week’ and ‘Drop Everything and Write,’” Ms. Amott-Erwig said.

Students returned from winter vacation with a spring in their collective steps. “As we welcome our students back after the New Year, we look forward to the many events that are planned for the winter and spring,” Ms. Amott-Erwig said. “Together with the PTA, we have planned engaging events. Our students will have to opportunity to enjoy, the Someone Special dance, PARP, which will kick off this month, Family Fitness Night, Bingo Night, the variety show, field day and Southdown Splash assemblies.”
