Huntington High School’s competitive dance team, the Highsteppers entertained a large crowd at halftime of last Friday night’s varsity boys’ basketball game between the Blue Devils and visiting Bay Shore.

The team is coached by Samantha Allen and Kristiana Salerno. The dancers include seniors Brooke Evans, Maria Sabatino (captain), Sophia Thompson (captain); juniors Adriana Abbatiello, Camilla D’Anna, Lea Devoe, Ariana James, Ava Tizzio (captain); sophomores Rosie Arner, Alyssa Evans; freshmen Kymora Dorvilus, Kyra Larsen; eighth graders Chloe Donovan and Jordyn Gross.

The Highsteppers won local, regional, state and even national honors over the years. The group frequently performs at halftime of varsity football and basketball games. They train and rehearse several times during each week.

“We have definitely shown a huge amount of improvement as dancers overall and our bond is so strong,” Ms. Tizzio said. “Being a Highstepper is definitely something younger students should be involved in if you are interested in dancing because it’s so fun to perform at games and compete.”

The Highsteppers will vie in several regional competitions before heading off to the national championships in Florida next month. The put on a hip performance last Friday night to the delight of the crowd.

“We are heading to nationals in less than a month, so we are now practicing every day of the week to make sure every routine is perfected and ready to perform,” Ms. Tizzio said. “Our team is so excited to finally be able to go to nationals since most of us have not been able to experience that yet!”
