january 9, 2023
Huntington High School’s environmental club welcomed in the new year with a renewed commitment to its mission, which is namely to improve the environment of the school, community and world with a focus on sustainability and Earth-friendly advocacy.
The organization’s executive board consists of Nadeera Ali (president), Lauren Gennarelli (vice president), Laurel Bonn (treasurer), Cecilia Kye (recording secretary), Sarah Krisch (corresponding secretary), Charlotte Gordon (historian) and Sophia Segal (social media correspondent). Science teacher Deborah Beck is the group’s faculty advisor.
“This year, the environmental club has been very active,” Ms. Segal said. “So far, we have had student presentations on important environmental topics, fun art activities and also hosted a stand at the bonfire. We are also planning an environmental t-shirt sale, which will be a school-wide opportunity for students to support the club. Along with this, we are looking forward to our annual gardening event in the spring and our end of the year Earth Day celebration.”
The club meets every other Friday from 2:25-3:00 p.m. “The environmental club has exciting things in mind for 2023,” Ms. Gordon said. “In January, we are hosting a bake sale to raise scholarship money for our wonderful senior members. We are also preparing to host a t-shirt sale with an environmentally friendly message on the front. We just voted on a design, and can't wait to start selling soon.”
