Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School Kicks into High Gear
january 6, 2023
These are exciting weeks at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, which bounded into 2023 with a full agenda of fun educational items and initiatives for the fourth, fifth and sixth graders studying in the building’s classrooms.
“Our fifth and sixth grade FIRST Lego League competition teams will be finalizing their robot and research projects to present at the regional competition,” Principal Donna Moro said. “The challenge this year is called SUPERPOWERED. Students are challenged to explore where energy comes from, how it is distributed and stored. We are excited that this competition has returned this year and are proud of our students’ efforts under the guidance of our Innovation Lab teacher, Christina Martino.”
The school’s student council is preparing for the building’s second STEM Challenge. “Students in all grade levels compete against their classmates,” Ms. Moro said. “The winning team from each class then competes at a grade level assembly to be STEM champion.”
Fifth graders will begin an astronomy unit by visiting the Vanderbilt Museum’s planetarium in Centerport. Fifth graders will kick-off the spring semester in the school’s Innovation Lab by working on their first Project Lead the Way project called “Computer Science for Makers and Innovators.”
STEM school sixth graders tackle their own Project Lead the Way assignment, named App Creators.
Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School fourth graders are set to begin preparations for the STEM Science Expo slated for late January. “Each class will prepare a presentation for families explaining a science concept they have learned in the first half of the year,” Ms. Moro said.
