Mr. Harkinish’s twin daughters, Adelina and Emma are third graders at Washington, making the visit even more meaningful to everyone. He serves with FDNY Engine 96 & Ladder 54 located in the Soundview section of The Bronx. The Firehouse is located at 1689 Story Avenue next to the 43rd Precinct.

“Adelina and Emma were so surprised when they walked into the gymnasium and saw their father ready to present to their teachers and friends,” Washington Principal Michelle Richards said. “Mr. Harkinish spoke about his journey on the way to becoming a firefighter. The students were able to observe some of the equipment he uses on a daily basis. Some students were able to hold his heavy fire overcoat.”

The third graders were all thrilled to receive a complimentary FDNY hat and pen. Learning about those who keep society safe and the value of public service are important facets of the education delivered at Washington Primary School.

“The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world’s busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency,” according to the organization’s website. “The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs.”

Founded in 1865, FDNY says it “has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation,” according to its website. “This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department’s core values. To that end, FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property. FDNY not only responds to more than a million emergencies every year, its personnel also strive to prevent them by continually educating the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes.”
