New Foundations of Education Course Approved

Huntington School Board members have approved a new Sociological and Philosophical Foundations of Education course that will be available to students for the first time during the 2024/25 school year. The half-credit, one semester elective class will be offered to juniors and seniors. Enrollment is estimated to total 25.

“This course is an inquiry into the process of education as seen by the historian, sociologist and philosopher,” according to the course description. “There will be an examination of selected contemporary problems within an historical context, with emphasis on the needs of a multicultural society. The effects of socioeconomic factors, health and safety issues, and other society aspects on student learning will be explored. The Huntington High School course will be co-seated with EDU 234 at St. Joseph’s University (dual enrollment).”

The Subject Matter Council approved the new course on December 13, 2022. The Educational Development Committee gave its approval on January 12. The course prerequisite is either Global Studies 10 Regents or Advanced Placement World History.

“This course will be offered to provide students interested in a potential career in education with opportunity to move forward by taking an undergraduate college level course,” states the course rationale presented to trustees. “Huntington High School will establish a partnership with St. Joseph’s University Bridge program and its Department of Education, with the common goal of meeting the interests of our high school students who may want to pursue a career in teaching. The course will do its small part in potentially generating interest in the education profession and contributing to a local educator pipeline.”
