Blue Devil Boys’ Basketball Celebrates Senior Day

February 7, 2023

Huntington seniors Hunter Borenstein, Joshua Stephen and James Viola were honored by the Blue Devil basketball team prior to the final home game. The three teenagers were feted on this year’s Senior Day, which featured a festive atmosphere in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Decorations adorned the bleachers and north gym wall. Head coach Peter Lipka spoke about each of the senior during a pre-game ceremony that saw the players present their respective mother with a colorful bouquet of flowers.

Lipka told the crowd, which included Principal Brenden Cusack and Superintendent James W. Polansky how much each of the seniors has meant to the team and how important they have been to him personally in this, his first year as Huntington’s head coach.

Lipka spoke about the trio again after the game when the team and family members gathered in the school cafeteria for a post-game party with food and drinks and a large cake.

The game itself saw Huntington fall behind early, 17-7. The Blue Devils trailed 31-18 at halftime and 47-31 after three quarters. But then the shots started dropping and Huntington rallied to come within five points, before North Babylon closed out the victory.

Borenstein had 22 points in the game, including three baskets from beyond the three point arc. Stephen scored 21 points, including four three-pointers. Freshman Jordan Jones had a three pointer in the game. Junior Tom Girimonti also had a basket in the game.

The two teams battled to a 30-30 standoff in the second half. The long rally ignited the crowd and Huntington creeped closer. While the Blue Devils ultimately fell, it was a fun night for the seniors before their home fans one last time.

Huntington closes out the season this week at Northport.
