Southdown’s January Stars Shine

February 3, 2023

Southdown Primary School stepped into February after a sensational month of January. Southdown honored its Stars of the Month after the youngsters made a positive impression on everyone in the building.

Southdown Principal Jill Amott-Erwig expressed pride in the work and efforts put forth by each of the award recipients. Teachers nominated the youngsters for the special honor.

Southdown opened in September 1954 on the same day as its sister schools; Flower Hill and Washington. It was situated in a corner of the district. At the time, Woodbury Avenue Elementary School occupied the southwest quadrant. Woodbury would later close and that area would be served by Jefferson Elementary School.

Southdown’s January Stars of the Month include:

Universal pre-kindergarten: Raul Mayorga Vicente

Kindergarten: Adrian Jimenez, Juryan Baca, Christian Tavarez, Vincent Aviles

First grade: Ryan Kaney, Carly Ventura, Mackenzie Lanza, Andrew Romano

Second grade: Brianna Alvarez Tevez, Tayla Quin, John Elle

Third grade: Owen Jennings, Heidy Gonzalez Robles, Nathan Holbreich, Alexander Granados Cruz, Jadyn Adam

Southdown has produced a long list of students who have gone on to great things in the world, including standout performances at Huntington High School. It’s still doing exactly that. The school has a dedicated corps of teachers who work with an energetic student body and are supported by committed parents.
