Frosh Mildred Hernandez Stars in Science Research

Many stars are emerging in Huntington High School’s Class of 2026 and Mildred Hernandez is one of them. The teenager is cutting a large profile in the science research program.

In her first 10 weeks of high school, Ms. Hernandez notched an academic grade average of nearly 97. It’s a wonderful achievement for a special young woman.

“Science is one of my favorite subjects here at Huntington High School,” Ms. Hernandez said. “I have learned many cool things and look forward to learning more through future science classes.”

The freshman and her research partners are studying “the inhibitory effect of lemon juice, vinegar and calcium propionate on saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli.” It sounds intimidating and daunting and it is, but with her sharp intellect and sense of curiosity, along with hard work, Ms. Hernandez cuts through the challenges along with her partners.

The teenager’s appreciation for science goes beyond the research class. Ms. Hernandez is also a member of Huntington’s Science Olympiad team. She is looking to pursue a science related career in medicine. Specially, the gifted young woman hopes to go into cardiology.

While Mrs. Hernandez’s achievements and accomplishments in the classroom are exceptional, her academic, extracurricular and athletic prowess goes much further than meets the eye.

The talented freshman played on the Blue Devil JV girls’ soccer and basketball team and she plans to run on the varsity girls’ track team during the spring season.

Ms. Hernandez is also a member of the high school’s Key Club and Habitat for Humanity chapters and she’s been chosen as a Natural Helper, assisting classmates in a confidential manner as they work their way through challenging personal and family related challenges.

Even while excelling in her classes, participating in the three separate sports seasons and volunteering with several clubs, Ms. Hernandez has found the team to learn how to play the cello.
