“I chose CUNY Hunter College because I wanted to have the New York City college experience without breaking the bank and 75 percent of Hunter College students graduate completely debt free,” Ms. Purcell said. “I feel it’s important to educate students that they can get a high quality education without taking out ridiculous loans. Hunter College is a great school with a super unique campus, a free tutor program, as well as tons of diverse and interesting clubs and groups to meet people with similar interests.”

Ms. Purcell enjoyed a well-rounded experience over the past four years. A member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and Social Studies Honor Society, she discerned her interests and carved out a very nice path.

“I chose to study political science because I feel it’s a field I’ve always excelled and found deep interest and passion in,” Ms. Purcell said. “I’ve been getting into political debates with my classmates since the sixth grade, so I couldn’t think of a major that would suit me better. Though I’m still figuring a lot of things out, I’ve considered attending law school after college and following in the footsteps of my older brother, but I’m also interested in journalism and education, etc.”

A sweet young woman who was popular with her classmates, Ms. Purcell compiled an impressive academic record culminating in her being recognized as a Distinguished Senior at a dinner last spring.

A five year member of the Huntington Blue Devil marching band, Ms. Purcell was a clarinet section leader as a senior. She was the social media coordinator for the Women’s Empowerment Club.

“I’d say one of the highlights of my high school experience would be Mrs. Beck’s AP Biology class in my junior year,” Ms. Purcell said. “Though it’s a very tricky subject, Mrs. Beck was so immersed in it and made her class a space where we could all interact and have fun while still learning.”

The teenager cited the ability to pace herself and divide her time wisely in order to study and complete every assignment as the key to her success along with keeping a “well balanced mind.”

“Though high school was definitely rough at times and could be very isolating, scary and nerve racking, it overall helped me grow as a person and brought me closer to my classmates and I was able to make some of my closest friends as well as learn from some extremely talented teachers,” Ms. Purcell said.

Located at 695 Park Avenue in New York City, CUNY Hunter College over more than 170 academic programs to its 23,000 students.

The Princeton Review called Hunter College “the crown jewel of the CUNY system.” Ms. Purcell’s classmates and teachers believe the teenager is perfectly positioned to continue succeeding at whatever she chooses to do.
